Awards and Scholarships

The Brewer Foundation is fortunate enough through our donors to provide financial awards to outstanding and deserving students. We currently have four endowed Awards that reflect a broad commitment from our donors to support the achievements of our scholars.

Corine Ellis Memorial Scholarship

Growing up in the segregated, depression laden south, Corine Ellis didn’t have many opportunities to attain an education.  The daughter of a share cropper, she, like her eight (8) brothers and sisters, were unable to continue their educational pursuits beyond grammar school.  This was Corine’s story.  However, she never allowed her past life history to prevent her from continuing toward the future that she envisioned for herself and her family.  As a result of her lifelong commitment to continued learning and help to the marginalized, an endowment has been established to fan the flame in a student who through life circumstances was not able to finish school the first time.
Kenneth J. Brewer, Sr. Enterprising Scholar Award

Mr. Brewer has achieved a great deal of accolades over his more than 30 year career, including the Minority Business Leader of the Year in Washington DC. In an effort to support the goals of a new generation of business leaders, we have established this award in his honor. The recipient will be, like Mr. Brewer, a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and enrolled/enrolling at his alma- mater Howard University's School of Business.

The Larry & Neldra Colwell, Emmanuel Baptist Scholars Award

Larry & Neldra Colwell, Emmanuel Baptist Scholarships (LaNCE) awards are given to high school seniors and/or currently enrolled full-time undergraduates who have been selected by the scholarship committee. This multi-student scholarship award will be given to members of Emmanuel Baptist Church who are recipients of the C. W. Ward Scholarship. After more than 30 years as teachers within the DC Public School system, Larry & Neldra Colwell continue their involvement with education through their service in Christian Education at Emmanuel Baptist Church. As members of Emmanuel, they combined their love of Christ with their talent of educating young people. This scholarship fully recognizes their belief in the benefits of extending an education beyond high school.

Geraine Armstrong Award for English

We are proud to announce a new award in the name of Mrs. Geraine Armstrong. A former DC Public School teacher with more than 30 years of service  at Jefferson Junior High School (now Jefferson Academy). The foundation has established in her honor an award for the  an eighth grader who shows excellence in grammar, composition, and literature. The student will receive a $250 toward their 529 College Savings Plan as part of our Preparing for College Initiative.

Willie J. Brewer, Jr. Technology Assistance Grant

Grant recipients will be awarded new or fully refurbished laptops or desktop systems. Additionally, they will receive productivity software in support of their technology needs. Lastly, if there is a need for assistive technologies, we will provide that software and any additional hardware.
